Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Hook Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Hook is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all services, including regular garden care, landscaping, hedge cutting, lawn maintenance and related outdoor work.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, protect health, minimise risks arising from our work, and promote a positive safety culture throughout Gardeners Hook. We aim to identify and control hazards associated with gardening work, including the use of machinery, tools, chemicals and vehicles, and to ensure that our staff are trained and equipped to work safely and responsibly.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Hook holds overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Regularly review health and safety arrangements to ensure they remain suitable, effective and compliant with applicable legislation. Provide appropriate resources, including equipment, training and supervision, to ensure safe working practices. Ensure that risk assessments are completed for relevant activities and that findings are communicated and acted upon. Monitor performance, investigate incidents and near misses, and use the findings to improve safety standards. Lead by example and promote a culture in which safety is a shared priority across the company.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Hook has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All employees are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, site rules, method statements and risk assessments associated with their work. Use machinery, tools, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Maintain good housekeeping standards in vehicles, storage areas and work sites. Report hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe conditions to their supervisor as soon as possible. Cooperate fully with any investigation, training, inspection or safety initiative organised by the company. Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol or drugs and report any condition that may affect fitness for work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Hook undertakes risk assessments for relevant gardening and landscaping tasks. These assessments consider hazards such as moving machinery, sharp tools, manual handling, slips and trips, working at height, exposure to noise and vibration, and the use of garden chemicals. Based on these assessments, we develop safe systems of work and method statements that outline the correct procedures for carrying out tasks safely.
Employees are trained in these procedures and must follow them at all times. Where the conditions at a site differ from those anticipated, the team leader will review the risks and adjust working methods to maintain safety.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
Gardeners Hook is committed to ensuring that all equipment used in our gardening operations is suitable, well maintained and used safely. We will:
Select tools and machinery appropriate for the task and maintain them in good working order. Carry out regular inspections and arrange servicing or repairs as required. Ensure that only trained and authorised personnel operate powered equipment such as lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers and mechanical cutters. Provide guidance on safe start up, operation, transport and storage of equipment. Ensure that vehicles used for transporting staff, tools and waste are maintained, inspected and loaded safely.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Hook provides personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, ear defenders, high visibility clothing, protective trousers and respiratory protection when necessary. Employees are required to use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition, and report loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Manual handling is an important aspect of gardening work. To reduce the risk of injury, we promote safe lifting and carrying techniques and encourage the use of mechanical aids, wheelbarrows and appropriate vehicles. Staff receive training in how to assess loads, avoid unnecessary lifting, share loads when needed, and take regular breaks from repetitive tasks such as digging, raking or pruning.
Chemicals and Substances
Where garden chemicals, such as weed control products or fertilisers, are used, Gardeners Hook follows product guidance and relevant safety information. We store chemicals securely, label them correctly and ensure that only trained staff handle and apply them. Personal protective equipment and appropriate application methods are used to minimise exposure to staff, clients, visitors, pets and the surrounding environment.
Working Conditions and Public Safety
Our teams often work in areas that remain accessible to clients, visitors and the general public. Gardeners Hook takes care to plan work so that risks to others are controlled. This may include using barriers or signs, scheduling higher risk tasks for quieter times, and maintaining clear communication with clients about work that may affect access. We take reasonable steps to protect property, vehicles, planting areas and garden structures while work is carried out.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Hook provides employees with information, instruction and training relevant to their roles. This can include induction training, task specific instruction, equipment use, manual handling, safe driving, and the correct use of personal protective equipment. Supervisors monitor working practices, correct unsafe behaviour and provide ongoing guidance and support to ensure that safety procedures are followed consistently.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses must be reported promptly so that appropriate action can be taken. Gardeners Hook records these events, investigates their causes and, where necessary, introduces additional measures to prevent recurrence. Our teams are briefed on basic emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of injury, fire, adverse weather or other unexpected events on site. First aid supplies are available to staff and vehicles are kept ready to leave a site quickly if conditions become unsafe.
Monitoring and Policy Review
Gardeners Hook monitors health and safety performance through site checks, equipment inspections, incident reviews and feedback from employees and clients. We are committed to continual improvement and will review this policy regularly or when significant changes occur in our operations, legal requirements or best practice guidance. Updated versions of the policy will be communicated to employees so that everyone understands their responsibilities and the standards expected.
By working together to follow this Health and Safety Policy, Gardeners Hook aims to protect the wellbeing of our staff, clients and the public while delivering reliable and professional gardening services throughout our service areas.
